The Aegis Fortress L3 is a USB external drive designed to meet NIST FIPS 140-2 Level 3 requirements completely. This means that the entire device, including the hard drive, electronics, external fasteners, and enclosure, is within the elevated FIPS Validation boundary. The enclosure is milled from a solid block of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum alloy and features snap-off uni-directional security fasteners and a membrane-style keypad. Data is encrypted on the fly with AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption as it is being written to the drive, ensuring protection even if the hard drive is removed from the enclosure. The Aegis Fortress L3 is ready to use right out of the box with no need for software, drivers, or updates. It is completely cross-platform compatible and works well on any PC, Mac, Linux, or mass storage compliant system with a powered USB port.

Like all Apricorn secure drives, the L3 features forced enrollment, eliminating factory-preset default pins and requiring the Admin to establish a pin before the device can be used. All pin entries are performed on the device's keypad, making it compatible with systems without keyboards and ensuring that it shares no security parameters with its host computer. The L3 has two Read-Only modes, protecting against USB viruses and preserving data in its original, unaltered state. It also features a Brute force Defense mechanism that initiates a crypto-erase after a predetermined number of consecutive incorrect pin entries, rendering all of the drive's data useless.

The Aegis Fortress L3 is configurable, allowing for custom profiles and mass configuration of multiple Aegis devices at once with Apricorn's Aegis Configurator (sold separately).
